The Hero Trap : First Look
About a month ago, I decided that I was going to have a look at Kickstarter, and see whether there was anything that would catch my eye to help fund.
Step forward The Hero Trap. Developed by Smashworx, The Hero Trap is a roguelike dungeon crawler, with a not to similar approach to Gauntlet. You start off with one beautifully cartoon styled character, who has one ability, after killing a few waves of creatures, and collecting the subsequent coins, you have the chance of recruiting up to a further 2 extra characters. These characters are themselves the souls of once mighty warriors, and have their own individual unique attack.
The games core mechanic therefore revolves around utilising one of your three heroes, switching between them with a press of their attack button. In the Pre-Alpha demo that I have played about with, some attacks definitely seem better than others, but each hero I played with was both fun and felt different enough to warrant their inclusion. Come the finished game, there will also be a multiplayer co-op mode that will allow you to continue using your favourite hero.
Even in its Pre-Alpha state, there is a lot going for The Hero Trap, but don’t just take my word for it, check out the demo yourself, available here on Smashworx now funded Kickstarter page, as well as the trailer below. Just remember it is a Pre-Alpha, it’s no where near perfect yet!
The Hero Trap is due for release September 2014, and will be available on PC, PS Vita and PS4.
